The FDA is running out of National Drug Code (NDC) numbers, and that means within the next 15 years, the U.S. healthcare community will experience an NDC shortage!

The FDA will run out of 5-digit combinations for drug labeler codes, requiring the entire U.S. healthcare ecosystem to reconfigure, recode, and retest every system that has anything to do with drugs. This will affect drug-related operations and orders for wholesalers, retail pharmacies, PBMs, hospitals, and more. That’s why the FDA is seeking feedback from the healthcare community as to how it should restructure the NDC.
